About reader data

Page views

We count page views, referring website names, and broad device types to understand how the essays are read. The analytics database does not store raw IP addresses, browser identification strings, or the contents of referring URLs.

A secret-key hash of connection information, changed each UTC day, provides an approximate daily visitor count. It does not identify a person and is not used for advertising or tracking across other websites. Page-view records are retained for up to 90 days. Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control signals are respected.

Reactions

Pressing 👍 saves your reaction. A random identifier in a first-party cookie remembers it for this browser for up to one year. The server stores a hash of that identifier with the essay and reaction date. Press the button again to remove your reaction. Changing browsers or clearing cookies may make the same reader count more than once.
